"Guilty Pleasures" - Quiet Riot, 2001

A discussion on BBC Radio 5's breakfast show this morning shook me out of my morning stupor, with a big laugh.

They were discussing what BBC Radio 2 apparently call "Guilty Pleasures". These are songs which people love but are embarrassed to admit they love.

My own "Guilty Pleasures" are the song "Dancing Queen" by ABBA and my closet obsession with old 70's disco music (especially when I'm driving out on the open road). YUCK, you're probably thinking. But undoubtedly each of you have your own list. And some of items would make me say "yuck", too!

But what made me burst out laughing early this morning was this comment...

There are songs that are guilty pleasures.
There are songs that just make us feel guilty.
And then there's Barry Manilow.

Hmmm . . . my guilty pleasure song would have to be . . 'I Get A Kick Out Of You' by Gary Shearston!
{Starts singing:
'I get no kick from champagne
Mere alcohol doesn't thrill me at all
So tell me why should it be true
That I get a kick out of you?'
followed by strange looks and the odd giggle from the people in the office.}

Oh, I can totally understand the Abba thing. I'm guilty too. :-)

I don't feel guilty liking any of the songs here. Should I feel guilty?

Very Nice Man: GREAT song...but I would pick the Sinatra version myself.

Heather: WHEW! Glad I have company in that one. Have you seen the musical based on ABBA songs, "Mama Mia"? It's great fun!

Milky Bar Kid: ABSOLUTELY NOT...no need to feel the least bit guilty! (By the way, I FINALLY saw an ad on TV the other day which featured your namesake! I had asked John what/who a "Milky Bar Kid" was!!!)

Vikki: I don't even want to know how many Manilow songs you have. You're a long-time friend, but we obviously disgree on THAT issue! ;-)
