"American Pie" - Don McLean, 1971

On Facebook today, I saw an advertisement for a program that will be on PBS tomorrow night in the US. It has to do with that age-old question...cake or pie?

When I first read the title, I pondered their question. It's a hard one for me. As I commented on Facebook, I guess it depends upon what type of pie it is and who made it.

And then my thoughts turned to one of the items of confusion when I began visiting the UK with regularity in the 1990s. I would see a sign saying "homemade pies" in shop or restaurant windows, only to find that they weren't lemon meringue or peach but were actually meat pies.

Now those meat pies can be very good. But they weren't what I was expecting.

I have to wonder just how many Brits has gone into the House of Pies in Houston and have been equally disappointed.

"It's a Gas" - Hombres, 1967

John and I recently spotted these in our local Sainsbury's. Despite our concern about...erm....the "after effects", we bought a can. They aren't too bad.

(Click on the image for a full-sized version.)

The language on the label still makes me chuckle, though. And who wouldn't be completely smitten when they see that delicate little drip of bean juice!
